Tutorial : Make Gradation Cloud with Photoshop


1. Open a new image, 500 X 500 pixels, RGB, 144 PPI, White.

2. Hit the letter D on the keyboard. Fill the background with Black using your fill tool.

3. Making the Star field

  • Insert layer and call the layer Star field. Using the fill tool, fill the layer with Black.
  • Click Filter=> noise=> add noise. Set noise to 5, monochromatic, Gaussian
  • Click Filter=> Blur=> Gausian Blur set at 0.5 blur.
  • Click Image=> adjust=> threshold. Set threshold to 15.

3. Creating the Nebula Cloud 1

  • Insert a layer and call it Nebula 1. Use the fill tool to fill with black.
  • Click Filter=> render=> clouds
  • Click image adjust invert.
  • Set the layer to screen mode, opacity 100
  • Use the eraser tool, set for a 100 pixel soft brush and erase away the edges inward to make an odd shaped cloud. Leave some of the less dense areas and remove some of the more dense areas. Remember each time you make clouds, it is different.
  • Click Image=> adjust=> hue Saturation
    • select COLORIZE
    • hue 257
    • saturation 25
    • lightness 0

3. Creating Nebula Cloud 2

  • Insert a layer and call it Nebula 2. Use the fill tool to fill with black.
  • Click Filter=> render=> clouds
  • Click image adjust invert.
  • Set the layer to screen mode, opacity 100
  • Use the eraser tool, set for a 100 pixel soft brush and erase away the inside where the purple cloud is below, and the very outside edges to soften up the cloud edge. Leave some of the less dense areas and remove some of the more dense areas.
  • Click Image=> adjust=> hue Saturation
    • select COLORIZE
    • hue 320
    • saturation 25
    • lightness 0


4. Creating Nebula Cloud 3

  • Insert a layer and call it Nebula 3. Use the fill tool to fill with black.
  • Click Filter=> render=> clouds
  • Click image adjust invert.
  • Set the layer to screen mode, opacity 100
  • Use the eraser tool, set for a 100 pixel soft brush and erase away the inside where the purple cloud is below, and the very outside edges to soften up the cloud edge. Leave some of the less dense areas and remove some of the more dense areas.
  • Click Image=> adjust=> hue Saturation
    • select COLORIZE
    • hue 0
    • saturation 50
    • lightness 0


5. Click on Nebula 3 (top layer). Hold down the control key and type the letter e twice to merge the nebula clouds.

6. Adding Lens Flare

  • Highlight your nebula cloud layer.
  • Click Filter=> REnder => lens flare.
    • Set the center of the flare to the right side of the cloud
    • brightness = 100 %
    • lens type = 35 mm prime
  • Click Filter=> Render => lens flare.
    • Set the center of the flare to center lower side of the cloud
    • brightness = 150 %
    • lens type = 35 mm prime
  • Click Filter=> Render => lens flare.
    • Set the center of the flare to upper left side of the cloud
    • brightness = 100 %
    • lens type = 50-300 mm prime
