Make 3D Dice


1. Open a New file 400 wide by 400 high RGB 144 ppi, white background.

2. Insert a layer by clicking the icon next to the trash can on the bottom of the layers panel.


3. Click Filter=> Render=> 3d transform. Grab the cube tool on the left and draw a relatively uniform sided cube.


4. Click the trackball tool and rotate your image so the sold back sides and bottom are in the forground. continue rotating untill these solid sides appear like a cube with a top. Click ok.
5. Click image=> Adjust=> Invert

6. Click image=> adjust=>hue/saturation.

  • check colorize
  • hue = 0
  • saturation = 100%
  • lightness = +25


Part 2- The dots

7. Insert a new layer and turn off layer1 and the background.

8. Insert 6 guides by clicking View=> New guide. Use the following settings

  • Horizontal 100 px
  • Horizontal 200 px
  • Horizontal 300 px
  • Vertical 100 px
  • Vertical 200 px
  • Vertical 300 px

9. Select the eliptical marquee and set to the options of fixed size, 96 wide by 96 high. Insert six layers. In each layer you will draw out the dots of the six different sides of the dice by putting the crosshair over the upper left guide crossing, and filling the circle with white. The six layers will look like the following set, one on top of another.

10. Right click on the first dots layer and select Blending options. Check Inner shadow and set to the following:

  • Multiply black
  • Pacity = 50%
  • angle = 100
  • Distance - 26 px
  • Choke = 0
  • size = 16 px
  • contour: half round


11. Check the Satin Blending options. Set the following:

  • Blending = normal
  • color= hex #B8DBFC
  • Opacity =50%
  • Angle = 19
  • Distance = 11 px
  • size = 14 pixels
  • contour - gausian
  • invert.

12. Right click on your first dots layer and copy layer styles. Right click on the other dots layers , one at a time and paste layer styles. On the blending options for the 6 and 1 adjust the inner shadow for the following:

  • opacity = 64
  • distance =5
  • size = 10
  • quality = half round

Turn off the layers hosting the 1, 2, and 3 dot sets. Turn on layer 1 for the cube.
13. Select the layer with 6 dots. Use your move tool with bounding boxes checked and click edit=> transform=>perspective. Adjust the layer for 4 dots so that it fits within the top side of the cube. apply the transform.

14. Select the layer for 5 dots. Use your move tool and bounding boxes checked and click Edit=>Transform=>perspective. Adjust the 5 dots so that it fits within the left side of the cube. Apply the transform.

15. Select the layer for 4 dots. Use your move tool and bounding boxes checked and click Edit=>Transform=>perspective. Adjust the 4 dots so that it fits within the right side of the cube. Apply the transform.

16. Link the three dots layers for 4, 5, 6 together. Click layer=> Merge Linked. Turn them off.

17. Turn on the 1, 2, and 3 dot layers. Transform using edit=>transform=>perspective the 1 dot layer for the top, 2 dot layer for the left side and 3 dot layer for the right side. Link these three layers together. Click Layer=> Merge Linked. Click Select=> ALl. Click Edit=> Copy Merged

18. Create a new canvas that is 600 wide by 400 high, 72 ppi, transarent. Click Edit Paste.

19. Turn off the 1, 2, 3, dot layer on your original image. Turn on the 4, 5, 6 dot layer. Click Edit=> Copy merged. Click on new image and click Edit Paste.

20. Use your move tool with bounding boxes checked and resize and rotate your dice the way you want it. Click layer=>merge down for the two dice. Right click on the dice layer, click Layer=> matting=> defringe. Set to 5 pixels. Save your image as a gif.
